Armistice Day 11 November 1918

11 November 1918 - from the diary of Sgt. Percy PEACHEY,

"Things have moved and apparently the war is over. Yesterday we had word through that the Kaiser had abdicated and that things were mixed.

This morning early I went to 14 Staty (14th Stationary Hospital) and they told me that the Armistice had been signed. Later we got word through here. All is a huge bubble.

Later I took Con along the front (at Boulogne sur Mer) and we agreed the point about things in general and marriage in particular.

All around is excitement and noire, in town (Boulogne) fireworks exploding, loud trumpets and any old thing that is moving. There are plenty of people about and things in general are very lively, one can hardly imagine what it is like. I feel very mixed myself and tired and played out.

There is very little else to mention, nearly everyone here is well tanked and still the camp is alright and alive."

Percy was based at the 2nd Australian General Hospital at Wimereux, just north of Boulogne sur Mer on the coast of northern France from late 1916 until early 1919.
